A staple in the medicinal practices of indigenous people for centuries, psilocybe cubensis mushrooms have long been used for healing purposes around the world. The scientific community has only recently taken note of the immense potential that these “magic” mushrooms have, especially when it comes to the treatment of mental health conditions like PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).
Recent studies show promising results in the specific use of psilocybin – the active psychedelic substance contained in magic mushrooms – for effectively treating cases of PTSD without the risk of side effects or returning symptoms.
Conventional Treatments for PTSD
The current leading treatment for PTSD is cognitive behavioral therapy, commonly referred to as CBT. This treatment involves offering guidance to the patient and helping them address the triggers and upsetting thoughts that have contributed to the development of their PTSD symptoms. Group therapy can also be helpful, as people suffering from PTSD can better support each other in a group setting by sharing their experiences and what has worked for them.
In addition to psychotherapy, many therapists will also prescribe an antidepressant or antipsychotic medication. These medications work for many but can have side effects. For some, these medications are only effective in the short term, and often require dosage adjustments or a change in medication entirely.
Treating PTSD with Magic Mushrooms
Psilocybin, or the use of magic mushrooms in general, has been found to have a beneficial effect on patients with PTSD. A recent study from the University of Florida found that psilocybin use can lead to neurogenesis. This is a process in which the brain repairs damaged cells in the hippocampus, the portion of your brain that stores memories. This process can aid patients trying to overcome the traumatic cycle that occurs as they deal with PTSD.
An additional New York study also found that terminally ill cancer patients found relief from mental health conditions after being treated with a single dose of psilocybin.
While there is an ongoing discussion about the effectiveness and overall safety of psilocybin, it’s hard to argue with research results. Representatives selling top quality mushroom spores for sale for scientific research tell us that the legal battle is ongoing, but many health experts point to the previously mentioned studies as valid evidence that psilocybe cubensis mushrooms should be legalized for medical treatment purposes. Therefore, there is some promise that future medication based on psilocybin will be developed to help those suffering from PTSD, along with other mental health conditions.
